Today I’m a littler embarrassed to admit this but I don’t think I’m the only one with this problem. Maybe me sharing this will inspire you to do something about yours…
Our doorbell was janky and should have been changed out the moment we moved in. Here we are though, six years later and I’m no longer ashamed. A doorbell is one of the very first things your guests TOUCH and no doubt I felt sorry for anyone who rang our bell. Here is how it looked right before we changed it. No, we don’t live in a crack house folks, despite how the doorbell looks.
Before you begin any installation prep, make sure the power is turned off at the breaker box. If you don’t know how to do this, please consult someone who does.
To ensure power is off, use a voltager tester. I love this one!
It was really simple to install, but we had to modify a little bit because our old doorbell was surface mount and the new, beautiful one required a small hole drilled into the siding. To avoid hitting wires I used a piece of square scrap wood from the overflowing scrap bin in the garage. I’m not going to lie, using pieces from the wood bin gives me so much satisfaction.
Use a tape measure to make sure the sides are equal in length. I used a palm sander to smooth the surface. To add a slight beveled edge, sand the wood at an angle. I used stain I already had in the garage (Minwax Kona) and applied two coats. I also had some spray poly left over so I used a bit of that for added weather protection. That area of the house gets SO much sunlight.
Drill a hole slightly larger than the back of the door bell button to ensure the button sits flush against the wooden piece.
Also, shout out to my very own personal electrical engineer for checking the work and making sure everything was safe and golden.
I have searched the interwebs to bring you an extensive collection of statement door bell buttons. There are some affordable options listed but don’t feel bad for splurging a little on one you really love. Remember, it’s the first thing people touch when they visit you. Why not have a door bell button you are proud of?! Comment below and let me know which is your favorite! I’m working on a giveaway!
